*New "Artistry" Sale Celebrates Handmade Crafts
    Shop Re-opens for Holiday Season*

Guilford Art Center's beloved Shop of contemporary American crafts will reopen for the holiday season for its annual Artistry Holiday Sale of Fine Craft & Art, November 13, 2009 through January 3, 2010. One-of-a-kind, handmade crafts by scores of artists from across the country will be featured at this annual event.

Artistry is a particularly anticipated event this year, since it means the GAC Shop will be open once again for the season. "People are excited to come back to shop here, and to find unique, high-quality objects along the shoreline," says Bonita Roggow, Shop Manager. "We have a huge array of handmade objects that make great gifts and are alternatives to mall-bought merchandise. Especially this year, trends show people giving fewer--yet more personal and meaningful-gifts."

Artistry features a wide-ranging assembly of crafts in many price ranges, including ceramics, candles, glass, fine art, metal, jewelry, fiber, wood, ornaments, cards, condiments, leather, toys, and more. Exhibiting artists are from across the country, with a strong representation of participants from Connecticut and the shoreline area. All proceeds from Artistry benefit the artists and Guilford Art Center's educational and community programs.

In conjunction with Artistry, the Center will feature the latest exhibition from Studio Art Quilt Associates, Transformations '09: Reflections, including 34 quilts made by artists from around the world.

Artistry hours are Monday through Friday 10am-6pm, Thursday 10am-7:30pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 12-4pm.
    Special Events Include:

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, November 13, 5-8pm: Join us for shopping, refreshments and music as we kick off this year's event.

MEMBERS' WEEKEND - November 13 - 15: Members receive 15% off all items. Members discount of 10% throughout the rest of sale.

JEWELRY & CHAMPAGNE: Thursday, December 3, 5-7:30pm: Sip Champagne while finding great gifts-or treats for yourself--including a huge array of jewelry by featured artists.

A photograph by Jenny Fields ’03, digital asset and project coordinator for University Communications, was chosen to be part of the Shoreline Arts Alliance’s IMAGES photography exhibit. The annual, juried photography competition is open to all residents of Connecticut and is highly regarded for excellence statewide. The exhibition will run from Feb. 9-28 at the Guilford Art Center, 411 Church Street, Guilford, Conn. The gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. daily.

The photo, titled “Rest,” is part of a series Fields photographed to chronicle the end of her grandmother’s life.

“It’s true that art heals,” Fields writes in her artist’s statement. “Somehow, the loss took on a different meaning with the inception of this project. I believe that as a culture, we would be better off if we started addressing inevitability, end results, final products. My grandmother taught me not to waste, how to stretch resources, and how to make the best of any situation. She taught us all how to live well, and how to die with dignity.”
